I have a boxer/terrier mix who weighs about 75 pounds. This past week she has started urinating more frequently than every two hours and cannot even make it
through the night without urinating in the house. The urine smells very strong and foul as if it were extremely concentrated even though she is urinating
frequently. She knows she has done wrong because she sits at the bottom of the stairs shaking like a leaf with her ears back and her tail between her legs
waiting for us to be upset with her and put her in time out. I am worried that this may be a medical condition rather than a behavioral thing. I was wondering
if there may be a more serious problem than a behavioral thing going on. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :-)

Sounds like she has a UTI. You should call your vet and have her urine checked. UTI's fit what you are describing......frequent urination and a VERY strong
foul odored urine. You may even see blood in the urine at some point. Don't wait too long....they are uncomfortable and do not get any better on their own.
As it progresses you may see her make multiple attempts to pee even after she has just peed. Sometimes they increase water intake as well.
As for her response to what she has done, if she has a UTI she is likely upset b/c she knows it's wrong but she really cannot help it. She probably feels bad You may want to offer her extra water than she normally would have. Let her go out often if you can. If she is crate trained you may want to crate her overnight. Best of luck and I hope it's resolved soon. |

Oh, I forgot to mention if you crate her, put a couple old bath towels inside. That way, if she must go, she'll likely pee on the towels and shove them to
the back of the crate so she can still lay and not be urine-soaked. Then of course throw the towels in the washer and wipe down her crate tray with something
safe but germ-killing.

Do you know of any home remedies for this? We are in a terrible rut financially and I don't want her to suffer because of the holidays cutting our funds
low.

Unfortunately there are no home remedies for UTI's, if that is what she has.....but it does really sound like one, especially w/ the pungent urine.
Commonly dogs will get blood in the urine as it progresses....at that point it absolutely must be treated. UTI's only get worse....they do not get better
on their own or with OTC supplements.
If it's a common bacterial infection (which would be likely), a round of oral antibiotics would be necessary for like 2-3 weeks. What I would do in your position would be to call your vet and describe the symptoms. If he/she suspects UTI also, see if your vet would be willing to prescribe you a round of broad-spectrum antibiotics to try for at least a week. If he/she does, great....try it. If she is going to get better from it, you will know within 3-4 days of antibiotics. From that point on, you'd have to continue the antibiotics for a total of at least 14 days. The above would be doing blind treatment, but it could save you the cost of a urine culture and urinalysis (though, you probably should at least do urinalysis to confirm infection and check for stones/crystals which is the least expensive test). If your vet goes for giving you an antibiotic to try and it doesn't work, more tests would be necessary. Despite what googling may tell you, giving cranberry supplements or juice: may do more harm than good, should not be done without consulting a vet and checking urine, and will NOT cure a UTI. Depending on the acidity of the urine it may help some problems but possibly cause others. I understand financial binds, believe me I do! I don't wanna sound like a nag, but if she in fact does have a UTI it must be treated ASAP. Please put a call into your vet and maybe he/she can work something out affordable for you. Again, please do not wait long. If it's let go it's possible the infection can spread to the kidneys, then it would be more difficult to treat and could possibly cause kidney damage. My dog has had more than one UTI and I also have had one myself.......they are VERY uncomfy and can be quite painful Best of luck.... |

Thanks so much! We prayed really hard about this all, and we were provided for. We did take her to a vet yesterday who took pity on our financial situation and
did the tests, and gave her medicine for only $80! We are so thankful for your help! Thanks a ton!

Unfortunately the antibiotics only seemed to be making her better. She started urinating blood and crying and straining so hard to pee. The vet said she needs
surgery and that she has stones. We are applying at several different helping organizations and have established a fund raising link for her to help pay for
the surgery. Please say a prayer for our baby. The cost of the surgery will be so high for us. We are praying for some kind of miracle.
