I have a cat, Ellie, that is showing signs of a cold. I got her and another kitty from the shelter in March. The kitten had a bad cold when I got her and Ellie picked it up. She showed signs 2 weeks after the kitten was getting better. The vet gave me eye ointment (erythromycin) and Vibramycin. I had to stop the viramycin after 6 days (she got really bad diarrhea from it which I am still dealing with to this day, 1.5 months later of very loose stools to diarrhea. Nothing has helped on that part yet, another story on it's own). Ellie has recently started to show cold symptoms again. Her purring is a bit ragged like she has congestion, she coughs occasionally, has been sneezing a little bit, and is now showing signs of weepy right eye. I took her to the vet before the eye issue and they couldn't hear anything and I couldn't get her to purr there so nothing was given to me. I have been researching about the L-lysine method for this so I called the vet and they said since they don't sell the product, they wouldn't recommend a dosage or to use it. So my question is, how much do you give? and can it be given in a souble form thru a dropper? She is 1 year, 3 months old and is 9-10 pounds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I am seeing anywhere, dosage wise, from 250mg to 500mg.

With both eye and upper respiratoy involvement, your kitty likely suffers from herpes viral infection, with which L-Lysine administration acutally works quite
well to augment the immune system to deal with the infection. I am a big fan of it.
Those is about 25 mg per pound of body weight, just to arrive at the dose, take the weight in pounds and multiply it by 25. My favorite way to dose kitties is to use Enisyl, a product which provides L-lysine in the form of either a pallatable paste, or as a soft treat. I sell these at my clinic, but they are not a presciption item, so perhaps you can call around to see if other clinics in your area would sell it to your without necessarily having to see your kitten. You can also find it online, such as at this site: http://www.revivalanimal.com/store/p/6095-Enisyl-F.aspx?feed=GoogleProductSearch&gdftrk=gdfV2457_a_7c543_a_7c1841_a_7c821_d_222 Good luck!

Hi Dr. Welton
Thanks for your response and advice. I did go to get some 500mg tablets for now, split and crushed it and put it into her food last night. I am going to look up the treats and get some of those to try with her. Thanks again for your helpful advice, I really appreciate it!! Mary |

I used the Enisyl for a while, but it was kind of expensive so I got some tablets like you did. I don't remember if the taste was bad or not, but what I do
with most medications now is place them in empty gelcaps. I crush the med, then use a tiny funnel to place it in the gelcap. This has saved me quite a bit just
by not having to have the nasty tasting ones compounded. Plus, you get a second (or third) chance to poke it down if at first you don't succeed.
Hope that made sense. I especially like this for Amoxie because then you don't have to worry about refrigeration or expiration. |

i spoke with the breeder of one of my cats about this awhile back when i was considering giving it- she uses it with her cats by crushing it up and either sprinkling it over their food or putting it in the water. |
