i'm wondering if anyone has any advice about my cat's (molly) recent blood work. she has aplastic anemia and is on 10mg of cyclosporine (atopica)
every other day and has been for the last 2 weeks- we're at the tail end of the tapering off of her meds. she vomitted 2-3 days ago, and it was
clear/yellowish- not pink or any blood. this was a bit alarming since she hasn't vomitted since she's been on the cyclosporine. then, she projectile
vomitted water last night, proceeded by 3 more times of throwing up water and foamy clear/yellow liquid (4 times in 2 minutes). then, she went and urinated in
the bathroom sink, something she has NEVER done before.
i took her to a vet this morning (not my normal vet b/c i am out of town, though i brought copies of all of her bloodwork for the past year for this vet to
review). her RBC and platelets were normal (a bit lower than they were 2 weeks ago), but her WBC had gone up to 7,100- her normal is around 3-4k. she
didn't have anything in her bladder to test for a UTI. the elevated WBC combined with the creatnine (i know i'm butchering that royally, but it shows
that she's having trouble eliminating waste from her kidneys and is retaining fluids) level of 2.0 (hers hasn't been above a 1.4) led the vet to put
her on a course of anti-biotics.
what could be causing the increase in WBC? could it be b/c she has an infection, or is it possible that her immune system is coming back again and will start
destroying her bone marrow?
possible UTI?

I do not see why UTI would be assumed when all the signs you described were GI related? WHat caused the vomiting is anyone's guess, dietary indiscretion,
inflammatory bowel disease, stress, infection, etc. As far as the increased WBC count, although it may be a bit higher than before, 7100 is still well within
the normal range of WBCs, leading me to not really giv ethat much credence right now. I do not really care if creatnine is eleveated if the BUN is normal.
BUN/creatnine elevated together in a 30:1 ratio are indicative if kedney compromise - so I would not get that excited about a creatnine elevation alone.
My plan would be to treat the GI signs with an anti-nausea injection, some SQ fluis, and perhaps a well tolerated antibiotic such as amoxicillin, perhaps re-check a CBC/chemistry in one week's time.

thanks, doc. she's on an anti-biotic that she's taken before and is scheduled for a re-check next week, so i'm glad she's on the right track
according to your recommendations. i just checked her bloodwork, and the BUN was 29- looks like it's in the normal range according to the indicators on
the chart.

I have to wonder if your kitty's health is being affected by you being away from home. Animals love their people so very much, and they are very big on
routines. When their routines are disrupted and they are separated from their people, lots of things happen with their health and behavior.
I frequently cat sit for one of my next door neighbors, she has 2 boys that are just over 2 years old. They are HER cats and while they love and know me, I'm not her. She gets bitten and gets the silent treatment when she returns from trips. But also, the last time I watched them, one of the boys redeveloped a urinary tract infection which had been treated and had cleared up the week before she left. The vet said that stress can cause infections to redevelop or put strain on the bladder. Stress is also a major factor with bladder problems in humans. |

my kittys are definitely creatures of habit, that's for sure! but she (and all the other cats) were with me at my boyfriend's place, so it couldn't be that. i'm actually a bit more worried now b/c she's still throwing up a good deal, and the anti-biotics don't seem to be helping. i'm trying to see if our regular vet can fit us in this morning instead of wednesday. i'm worried it's a relapse of her anemia. and she urinated in the bathtub right after she threw up this morning- she hasn't done that since last week when this all started. i was able to suck up the sample with a syringe, so i'll take that with me to the vet. if it is something serious, i'm just hopeful that we were able to catch it soon enough. |

well, as it turns out, there's not a thing wrong with molly!! docs think that she probably just has a bug. ALL of her tests came back great- CBC,
chemistry, x-ray, the whole nine. they ran a test for pancreatitis on the off-chance that it's that, and the results will be in in the next few days.
