Hello everyone,
I hope that perhaps someone can help me out with this situation.
We had a cat at one time that would get crusty stuff along his neck/throat as well as his hind legs. It always happened around this time of year (May-June, I
live in the Northwest). We don't have him any longer. About a year after he left us, we got another cat, who is about 5 years old now and he is an indoor
cat. Well, he has the same problem that our previous cat had. We don't know why this is happening. Would anyone have an idea at what could be causing
this? And suggestions on how to treat it? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank You for your time..

Could you take a photo and show us? I'm not sure what "crusty" means, do you mean dry flaky skin? Have you tried changing the type of litter you
use? Has he been treated for parasites?

My first guess would be an allergic reaction to something. You've had him 5 years and the is the first time the problem has occurred? And like Jackie said,
have you ruled out parasites?

Well, I don't think it would be an allergic reaction to his kitty litter, we have used this kitty litter all along. I know that this happens every year at this time. And unfortunately I am unable to take a picture of it. The crusty is like a scab and it's kind of the color of yellow. I was told that it is a possibility of dust mites. I know that one time I took him to the vet and she said that he was bitten.. Uh, bitten? He is an indoor cat and I know that his humans really don't have the desire to bite him. Hmmm hopefully we will be able to figure this one out, soon I hope.. Thank You for your Time.... |

I don't know about cats but it sounds like what my childhood dog had: "hot spots", brought on by allergies (seasonal, in his case). We were given
prednisone for him, but luckily the areas were not infected. Every summer he had it around July or August. If it's allergy induced, it could be one of many
things. My sister's dog just had this and even pulled a patch of hair out. A cortisone shot has helped a lot.
Hmm, I do wonder if cats get this too. |

There are some bugs that are born in houses and then live outside. This is especially the case for homes where there is a significant cold weather season.
It really does sound like a seasonal allergy. In any case, I suggest shampooing your cat (or just the affected areas if you find it not possible to shampoo him) using a product designed for cats and contains a significant amount of oatmeal. :-) I hope you figure out what the culprit is and your kitty improves. |

If I were you I would have a vet look at him, you may need to do a skin biopsy(which is a very simple procedure)or at the very least have your vet take a
scraping and look at the cells under a microscope. A picture would be helpful if you can get one uploaded.
