True is hanging in there. He has adapted to having his leg in a full bandage but this has definitely taken it's toll on him. Really he doesn't do much other than sleep and eat but at least he's giving the odd grin now and then. iI still haven't seen the wound on his leg. We go every 2-3 days for a new dressing. They say a small area of the tissue died at his last recheck so hopefully it didn't progress. Because of the holiday here in Canada he'll be keeping this...

I have the big guy home. He is no where near himself but we are coping. His leg is bandaged from arm pit to toes and it's making it difficult to get him outside in this rain but we are managing. Even though they will not admit any connection between the dog bite and his leg my bill was mysteriously half of what it should have been. I don't need a formal admission....That was good enough for me. We go back tomorrow for a bandage change.

A good client who is willing to provide and pay for care for their pet is worth an occasional discount...yes?

Anybody who has 4 or more patients with us that are seen at least once yearly, automatically gets a 10% discount in my clinic. beyond that, I am ethically bound to treat all clients equally. If it ever got out that I was applying different cost standards to different clients, even if the ones who are cherry picked to get a special discounts are...

I understand completely. Maybe you need to be a bit more firm with them as far as what's going on. Sometimes I have to do what I can at home when ideally it would be best for my pet to be hospitalized. I don't know if this was an option with True.

A month where my pet expenses exceeds my income is not uncommon, so I've just had to be direct about asking the vet what can I do myself to cut down costs. Sometimes you just have to let them know you aren't made of money....

No news yet today. Last night they said they were going to unwrap the leg and take the drain out and if it looked good he would be home by lunch. I'm guessing that was not how it played out though because it's 1pm and no call from them

The university is denying any connection between the bite and what is happening but I still think his leg must have been nicked in the altercation. I'm getting very nervous...

Poor True is having quite a rough time....poor baby. Wash his blankies b/c I'm sure he'll be home soon. It sounds like they are being cautious and thorough with his condition.

Sometimes it happens so quickly and quietly that you don't notice a bite. If they roughhouse, sometimes a little nip can go unnoticed. I've had many a problem with unleashed dogs coming after Chloe and even some near misses in the vet office (luckily there are 2 exits). Of course that's the...

If my pet got injured in their waiting room by someone not controlling their animal I'd be pissed. I know, it won't help True, but it really makes me angry when people (and animals) have to suffer the consequences of someone else's dumb move.

Still no call so I called the girl that I chat with in billing and she's says True is still alive and well back in the ICU. it would be nice to know if they intend on sending him home today or not so I can make plans for the rest of the day.

Not calling on cases in my hospital is usually a good sign, since it is the cases that go bad that necessitate priority communication with the owner. But, that could be just us. If I were you, I would never hesitate to call. Your beloved pet is a critical patient under their care - and paying a mighty premim for it. You have every right to call as often as you want to see how your boy is doing. No vet under these circumstances should ever feel put out when owners call for updates, so please...

I have a feeling that perhaps things aren't going very well. I haven't actually talked to anyone for over 24 hours now. I expect they will call at some point. He is not home yet and they told me that they just have to take it one day at a time. I really should call but I hate to bother them...they will call when they have something to tell me.

Thanks Doc.....thye have done exactly what you said. They are doing the cultures and have him on the antibiotics that you recommend. You know it never occurred to me that perhaps his leg got a bite in the scuffle as well! Of course they are running around like crazy trying to convince me that the leg issue is completely separate from the bite to the face. They say that if he is doing OK that he will come home today. I'm waiting to hear now.

I am so sorry to hear that, True. If that littel one of yours did not have bad luck, he wouldn't have any at all. Unless true was already septic, infection would not have travelled from the face to the leg. They were probably both from two separate bite wounds but the puncture on the leg was probably initially small enough to heal over and the infectio njbrewed underneath the skin.

With his Imuran and neutropenic status, infection can get out of control in a quick way. Did they...

No, it happened with me right there. A woman with a pregnant labrador in for an ultrasound let out the leash to let her dog interact with True. He was sitting by my side with his head turned and the dog startled him and he snarked at it a bit. There was a 3 second face bitey thing before the woman pulled her dog back.
